Dividend Growth Stock Portfolio – Nov 2020

Let´s talk about money! In this article I will reveal the current status of my dividend growth stock portfolio, including a detailed analysis of my portfolio allocation in terms of market sectors, a region analysis and a forecast of dividend payments. I have already presented My Personal Long-Term Investment Strategy in detail, but in the following you will find a short summary once again:

  • Long-term buy and hold strategy
  • Focus on big corporations with sustainable business models
  • Dividend yield target of 4% (on costs)
  • Annual average rate of return target of 5-7%
  • 70% portfolio allocation to dividend paying stocks
  • 30% portfolio allocation to growth stocks
  • Combination of value and dividend growth investing, with a bigger allocation to growth stocks

The current status of my portfolio may differ from the above-mentioned targets. These are long-term targets that I would like to achieve on average.

This article series is intended to show you from scratch how building a stock portfolio with a long-term and cash flow-oriented approach could work. I started with this portfolio in August 2020 and will add more funds every month. Due to that, there will be a portfolio update every month (always on weekends when the stock markets are closed). Moreover, I will provide additional information on why I decided to invest in the companies mentioned below, but this will not be part of this article.

Of course, I have to refer to my Disclaimer at this point, as none of the following information should be considered as investment advice or recommendation.

Portfolio dashboard – Nov 2020

The portfolio dashboard provides the most important information and the current status of my portfolio on one page (one click opens it on a separate page):

  • Portfolio balance
  • Dividend statement incl. dividend meter
  • Market sector analysis
  • Region analysis
  • Top positions in terms of portfolio weight
  • Current winner and loser of the portfolio

Portfolio balance – Nov 2020:

  • Initial investment: €6,570.00
  • Current portfolio value: €6,848.17
  • Profit / loss: €278.17 (4.23%)

I started this portfolio in August 2020, just before the 10-15% market correction during September and October this year. The maximal drawdown of my portfolio was 9.5%, which is less compared to main indices. However, I continued to invest in early October and early November and was able to cost average down, which supported the recovery of my portfolio.

Portfolio allocation – All companies

In the following you will find an overview of all positions of my portfolio, including their portfolio weight. My 5 largest positions are:

  1. McDonald’s Corporation: 3%
  2. Microsoft Corporation: 3%
  3. Visa Inc: 3%
  4. Allianz SE: 3%
  5. Apple Inc: 3%

Portfolio allocation – Market sector analysis

In the following you will find a market sector analysis of my portfolio. The 5 largest sectors represented in my portfolio are:

  1. Technology: 24%
  2. Financial Sector: 17%
  3. Consumer Staples: 10%
  4. Clean Tech / Hydrogen / E-Mobility: 9%
  5. Real Estate: 7%

The technology and information technology sector together make up about 29% of my portfolio. However, some companies that I personally classify as technology companies are included in other market sectors (e.g. Microsoft – market sector software), thus my allocation to technology companies could be somewhat higher. But I have not changed the general classification and follow the commonly used classification for all companies. I have only added a new, not commonly used market sector „Clean Tech / Hydrogen / E-Mobility“.

Portfolio evaluation

So far, my portfolio is in line with my long-term investment strategy. I have a larger allocation to growth stocks of about 30%, as projected. In general, I have mainly invested in large cap stocks. Diversification is satisfying in terms of market sectors, but not yet in terms of regions.

As far as market sectors are concerned, I am planning to increase my allocation to stocks from the renewable energy sector. In addition to that, I am planning to buy more stocks from companies located in Asia, in particular China, in order to further diversify geographically.

Therefore, I will add further funds to positions I already have in my portfolio in December this year. But in January 2021 I will focus on China-based companies and therefore add new positions to my portfolio. However, I will need more time to thoroughly research the Chinese market.

Only the dividend yield of my portfolio is well below the target of 4%. This needs to be further optimized.
